PORTABLE HEATER SAFETY

This is an unusual holiday season for the central gulf of Texas because it is cold! Many of us are trying to beat the chill and stay warm with a little miracle called a space heater.

Space heaters are small, energy efficient, and keep you toasty without the emotional commitment of a warm body! As a word of caution, however, these amazing appliances can also be very hazardous. Here are some precautions to ensure a safe and snug winter:

· Turn off and unplug: Like all electrical appliances, space heaters should be turned off and unplugged when not in use to prevent the risk of fire or short out in the event of a surge. Better safe than sorry!

· Keep away from water: Sounds simple but begs to be mentioned! We know it can be chilly when doing bathroom business or working in the kitchen but keep space heaters away from water sources such as sinks, toilets, bathtubs, and showers.

· Maintain a healthy distance: Space heaters should be at least three feet away from people, furniture, window treatments, etc. Do not drape anything over or near the heater that could be a fire hazard.

Practice these safety measures and have a warm, enjoyable, safe and sound winter!
